![]() Like when he had movie night with the Robins. Mature and intelligent, but still very warm. The REAL man is the way he acts around his family. ![]() If it was, that would make him a broken man and mean that the criminal element has won. He needs to rid himself of emotions in order to wage this war on crime, but that's not actually who he is in his heart. But really, he has three, and Batman is just as much of a mask as his Bruce Wayne persona. I feel like a lot of writers fall for the trap that Batman has two personalities Bruce Wayne being the mask and the dark knight being his true self. I think the way to give Batman some personality is giving him human moments with his friends and family. I feel like writers have a difficult time injecting color into his personality so that he's not constantly stoic and infallible and boring, which is why some writers go the route of making him sardonic (Snyder) or slightly sadistic (Miller). But other versions can be far TOO stoic and boring, also keeping me from enjoying them. That really keeps me from enjoying his run because Batman seems out-of-character for me. For example, the Scott Snyder Batman will occasionally make a sardonic wisecrack or mock his opponent. Some people might say that adds versatility to the character, but at the same time it's difficult for me to get attached to multiple different versions of the character since they all act so differently. That's not even taking Batman from polar opposite ends of the spectrum, like the Adam West Batman. For example, the Frank Miller Batman is basically and entirely different person from the Paul Dini Batman. His characterization is more consistent, every writer seems to have a different opinion on how talkative/pessimistic/brutal/stoic/prideful Batman should be. I think I like Matt's personality more though. I also like the idea of him traveling the world, collecting all of his skills, and ultimately reaching the pinnacle of humanity in every way. Disregarding the utterly iconic story and imagery, the mere fact that it gives an EXPLANATION for why Batman wants to help people is a big bonus. Batman's origin is at least one area where he takes an obvious advantage.
